Selection and planting of fruit tree seedlings - recommendations

Selection and planting of fruit tree seedlings - recommendations
Any experienced gardener will tell you that a properly selected and competently planted seedling will be able to please for many more years with a stable, high yield. Therefore, there are several immutable rules that have never failed yet. We will share them with you. Following these simple recommendations, you will not regret the wasted time, and you will not be tormented by disappointment.
• The time of planting seedlings in different regions has its own deadlines.
- For temperate and northern latitudes, experts advise planting in the spring, so that in a short summer the seedling can take root and prepare for hibernation. If you still have to plant in the fall, then it is best to bury the planting material by placing it at an angle of 35-45 ° and falling asleep almost to the top of the head at the site of the future planting.
- In the middle zone and in the south, it is better to plant and replant trees in autumn, as soon as the heat subsides and sap movement begins to slow down. Otherwise, if you plant a seedling in the spring, it is likely that with the sudden onset of summer, you will get dehydration of the roots and burn of the young bark.
• The age of the seedling - everything is simple here: the younger, the better. The best option would be an annual or two-year-old seedling. With a closed root system (in a package with soil), you can also buy a 5-6-year-old seedling. It's up to the price.
• The root system is the first thing to pay attention to. According to it, you can determine the age, type of rootstock and even the variety of the future tree. It should be healthy in appearance, without any unnecessary growths and unnatural formations. There should be no serious damage that occurs with improper digging and signs of drying or freezing of the root. Ask the seller to trim the tips of the largest roots, they should be white and moist, not brown. There should be at least three skeletal roots, they keep the seedling in the ground, but in addition, numerous small roots (lobe?) are also needed, which the tree feeds on. The more of them there are, the better.
• The crown should not have gross damage to the bark from the place of inoculation to the very top. The stem (the distance from the inoculation to the branching point of the twigs) in an annual seedling should be 80-100 cm, in a two-year-old up to 200 cm. There should be at least several branches symmetrically arranged around the trunk.
• Planting in the ground is the most important part. The hole should preferably be dug in advance so that it warms up and is ventilated. Its dimensions should be such that the seedling stands freely under its weight without bending the roots. In width, 50-60 cm will be enough for an annual, 90-120 cm in diameter for a two-year-old tree. Mix the selected soil with humus, add complex fertilizers. Pour a bucket of water into the pit, let it soak in. In the center of the hole, drive a reliable peg, put a seedling next to it and cover it with earth, spreading it with your hands between the roots, and then very hard to stamp. The vaccination should remain 5 cm above ground level. Tie the tree to a peg so that it is not swayed by the wind, and pour abundantly.
